Wyoming adopted new science standards in 2017 that were largely based on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The state had previously banned the NGSS in 2014, but the ban was repealed in 2015.

Wyoming Common Core State Standards were formally adopted June 16, 2012, by the Wyoming Department of Education with full implementation in the 2014-2015 school year. In 2014 a bill to roll back the Common Core educational standards in Wyoming was introducted to the House.

Wyoming officially joined and the SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) in 2010. In 2016 the Wyoming Department of Education has ended its affiliation with the Assessment Consortium. The state currently uses the Proficiency Assessment for Wyoming Students (PAWS), which is not an SBAC test. State Department of Education (DOE) officials announced in May 2016 they won’t be adopting the SBAC system when they seek bids for a new testing contract in the fall.
