Wisconsin adopted the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in 2017 by adopting the Wisconsin Standards for Science (WSS), which are based on the NGSS.

Wisconsin Common Core State Standards were formally adopted June 2, 2010, by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction with full implementation in the 2014-2015 school year. Bills were filed to repeal the standards but it was pulled from the floor in February 2014.

In 2010 Wisconsin joined the the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC). Later in the year the state joined the Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) Alternate Assessment System Consortium. In 2014-15 the state introduced the new Badger Exam 3-8, Wisconsin’s Smarter Balanced Assessment. The Badger Exam was discontinued after one year of administration. For the school 2015-2016 introduced the Wisconsin Forward Exam.
