West Virginia Common Core State Standards were formally adopted June 2, 2010, by the West Virginia Board of Education with full implementation in the 2014-2015 school year. Bills were filed to delay implementation until 2016 and in December 2015, the Board of Education voted unanimously to repeal the state’s Common Core-based education standards and replaced it with a set called the West Virginia College and Career Ready Standards.

West Virginia joined the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC). In February 2017 the Board of Education voted to discontinue its use in the Mountain State. They are also reducing the amount of testing they require.
