New York adopted the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and adapted them into the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS). New York was one of 27 lead states in the adoption of the NGSS.

New York formally adopted the Common Core Standards July 19, 2010. The State Board of Regents delayed implementation until February 2014. This delay means that the standards will not be a requirement for high school students until 2022.
